Homicides fell in 2025. Race weekend still empties the house.
IMPD recorded about 133 homicides in 2025, down from 241 in 2021. That is progress. It is not a reason to leave the sliding glass unlocked on a Tuesday in Meridian-Kessler.
What the 2025 numbers actually say
Indianapolis finished 2025 with roughly 133 IMPD homicides, a sharp drop from the 241 recorded in 2021. Direction matters. The house still sits empty during the workday, on a Pacers night at Gainbridge, and when the 500 empties Speedway and the west side.
Those are citywide figures. They mix downtown, Fountain Square, Irvington, and the far-north ZIPs. A quieter street is not 24/7 monitoring. A neighbor on the porch is not an ADT operator.

Walkable commercial strips are why people add a doorbell. Mass Ave, Broad Ripple Village, and Fountain Square collect Amazon boxes on stoops while owners are downtown or on I-465. A camera you check yourself is useful. It is not the same as ADT calling you when a door opens.

Will IMPD come if the alarm trips?
